Project outline
Improvements to the East London and North London lines have become essential in the face of growing demand. The response by London Overground has been to implement a series of infrastructure enhancements to both lines with the aim of creating a 25% increase in capacity on the network. Temple were appointed Environmental Advisors on the project.
The improvements include:
- Construction of new sidings to provide additional stabling capacity and their connection to the rail network at Silwood and Willesden.
- Reconfiguration of New Cross Gate and Willesden Train Maintenance Depot.
- Platform extensions at more than 20 stations and associated works (including signalling alterations).
Our role
Temple was appointed as Environmental Advisor at the feasibility stage of this project. We developed project sustainability aims and objectives that have provided a framework to deliver the requirements of TfL, as well as local and regional planning authorities.

Our value
- Working collaboratively with design teams and contractors to identify innovations that deliver against their aims.
- Temple evaluated the actions to develop Sustainable Design Action Plans to integrate the actions into design and translate, through procurement, actions for the contractor.
- Providing Ecology and Invasive Species Management Plans and supervision during construction works.
