Assessing socio-economic and human health impacts

There is growing awareness for new infrastructure and property development in response to the impacts on people, communities, jobs, health and wellbeing. Consideration of such impacts will be decisive for the long-term sustainability of any development scheme.

Socio-economic Assessment

Socio-economic assessment is often a chance to showcase some of the potential benefits of a new scheme. Well considered and quality development can transform the lives and livelihoods of people and communities, from creating new employment to providing educational, cultural, community or open spaces and opportunities for social interaction.

Temple’s specialist team of socio-economic assessors undertakes population modelling, employment and skills analysis and social infrastructure demand analysis to quantify impacts. Coupled with our knowledge of policy and social and economic issues, and understanding of assessment processes, we bring rigour to assessment. This facilitates a smooth journey through the planning process and assists clients in meeting statutory requirements.

Health Impact Assessment

We know that countless different aspects of the built environment can influence not only our physical health but also our mental wellbeing. From enabling healthy behaviours to providing the uses which support good health, places can act as a catalyst for improving these. Health Impact Assessment (HIA) is a tool to help developers and planners consider the health of communities – of how development might reinforce inequalities and inadvertently damage people’s health, or actually have positive outcomes.

Temple is currently delivering HIAs for major infrastructure projects and high-profile development projects. Our expertise has further developed through supporting local authorities in the review of HIA submissions and in providing advice and guidance on embedding their HIA policies. We work closely with air quality, noise and other environmental specialists to ensure adverse health impacts are quantified and minimised.
