EIC update: Nature and Biodiversity – a guide for development

The Environmental Industries Commission (EIC) have recently launched their nature and Biodiversity guide for development. This guide, “Nature and Biodiversity: A Guide for Development,” is intended for professionals involved in development projects who may not have a background in nature. It is primarily designed for scheme developers, program managers, and major contractors. The guide aims to introduce the concepts of Biodiversity Net Gain (in England) and natural capital, explaining how these can be practically applied throughout the lifecycle of a development project.

The authors of the document are experts from across the environmental industry and Temple’s Dr Sarah Cox was one of them. It is such a huge honour to contribute to something like this, and the importance of this type of guidance in the industry. Sarah’s contribution was in section 3 of the guide which focuses on  Biodiversity Net Gain and Natural Capital Throughout a Project Life Cycle. This section outlines how to integrate Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) and natural capital throughout a project’s life cycle. Best practices for both concepts are detailed across various stages of the project, from inception to operation.

“This is not just a document; it can be a catalyst for change if applied across the sector. As project managers and developers embrace its principles, we will move closer to a future where development and nature coexist harmoniously, and communities can thrive.” – The EIC
