Illuminated River Project wins 2021 Civic Trust Award
Temple is delighted that the Illuminated River Project has won a 2021 Civic Trust Award. The awards acknowledge projects that have made an outstanding contribution to the quality and appearance of the built environment. Award winners are schemes that have demonstrated excellence in architecture or design, whilst being sustainable, accessible, and provide a positive civic contribution.
Illuminated River is a long-term art installation transforming the Thames at night with a choreographed series of light works that can be view on nine of the bridges in central London. The moving sequences of LED light symbolically unify the Thames bridges, drawing inspiration from the spirit and history of the river and from the architectural and engineering heritage of its bridges.
Temple led the preparation and submission of the Environmental Statement including 30 planning applications and 18 listed building consents, covering the fifteen bridges in seven local authorities. Alongside the Statutory Environmental Statement, Temple also produced a digital Interactive Environmental Summary (IES), one of the first of its kind. This marks an important step towards presenting the environmental information contained within the Environmental Statement in a much more interactive and user-friendly format.
Judges’ Comments: “The project makes an outstanding contribution to the River Thames and the surrounding built environment. It is of excellent design quality and provides a positive civic contribution.”
Going forward Temple will continue to support the Illuminated River Foundation on environmental issues including maintaining the Illuminated River Interactive Environmental Tool and providing further updates associated with the launch of the next phases.
