Illuminated River Project goes live

On the 17 July 2019 London Bridge, Cannon Street Bridge, Southwark Bridge and Millennium Bridge were lit-up as part of a £45million project to illuminate the fifteen bridges that cross the River Thames and create the longest artwork in the world.

Temple were excited to be there to celebrate the successful delivery of this phase of the project having worked with the Illuminated Rivers Foundation since 2017. We led the preparation and submission of the Environmental Statement including 30 planning applications and 18 listed building consents, covering the fifteen bridges in seven local authorities. Alongside the Statutory Environmental Statement, Temple also produced a digital Interactive Environmental Summary (IES), one of the first of its kind. This marks an important step towards presenting the environmental information contained within the Environmental Statement in a much more interactive and user-friendly format.

Over the past few months Temple worked closely with Illuminated River, to update the IES and make it an Illuminated River Interactive Environmental Tool – providing information focused on the environment (flora, fauna, energy, light spill) to be more engaging to the public.

The completed Illuminated River will span 4.5 nautical miles from Albert Bridge in the west to Tower Bridge in the east. The Illuminated River artwork is now the longest public art commission in the world!

Going forward Temple will continue to support the Illuminated River Foundation on environmental issues including maintaining the Illuminated River Interactive Environmental Tool and providing further updates associated with the launch of the next phases.
