What is Earth Day?
Earth day is an annual event from EarthDay.org, a global charity that sets out to drive meaningful action for the planet. Their work includes raising awareness and highlighting the global challenges around areas such as climate action, people & communities, and plastic & pollution amongst others. This year the theme of the three-day summit is ‘Restore Our Earth’ and from this, there are five pillars that will be the key focus areas. These include:
Food & Environment: The aim of this is to encourage people to tackle climate change with diet change – otherwise known as reducing your ‘foodprint’. A foodprint measures the environmental impacts associated with the growing, producing, transporting, and storing of our food.
Global Earth Challenge: This helps by getting public volunteers to contribute to scientific research, the Global Earth Challenge is aiming to become the world’s largest organised citizen science campaign by developing a new mobile application for data collection.
Climate Literacy: The aim behind climate and environmental literacy will be to create jobs, build a green consumer market and allow people to engage with their governments and communities in a meaningful way to eliminate climate change.
The Canopy Project: This project aims to improve the environment by planting trees across the globe.
The Great Global Clean Up: Every year 270,000 premature deaths are caused by the uncontrolled burning of household waste. It’s also estimated 79% of all plastics ever produced have accumulated in the natural environment or landfills. Click here to find your local Global clean up.
Why is this important to Temple?
Temple is committed to climate action and has recently published our updated carbon emission figures as part of being a signatory of Pledge to net zero. As well as this our latest insight report is focused on our approach to measuring homeworking carbon emissions which is part of our net-zero pledge. We also regularly update our Environmental Policy Statement which is a documented commitment of our approach to environmental management. We serve to champion conservation, wildlife, the environment and the people and communities in this space. We incorporate schemes and technologies that reduce our environmental impact whenever possible, working towards improving efficiency and sustainability across Temple, we also encourage employees, suppliers, and partners to do the same. The climate crisis might have been overshadowed by Covid-19, but that doesn’t make it any less of a priority for Temple.
