The Environment Agency (EA) required national carbon specialists to conduct verification of project carbon assessments and support the integration of a new carbon assessment approach into business as usual. The contract was initially scheduled to end in September 2023 and was then extended until August 2024.
Temple (through our partners JBA Consulting) provided carbon specialists on secondment to the Environment Agency’s national carbon team, where they worked with the Midlands and Eastern areas verifying construction project carbon assessments.
The EA had implemented a new carbon assessment approach, which included carbon budgets at the project and area levels. Alongside carbon verification, the carbon specialists worked to inform and support project team members and area managers to understand the new approach and embed it into normal working practices.
Temple brought our experience and knowledge of infrastructure carbon management and reduction, including of PAS2080, to the role. In addition to conducting the carbon verification of projects, we were able to deliver added value in developing and delivering carbon reduction objectives, guidance and in knowledge transfer to the EA project teams; Helping EA get ready to deliver their Net Zero aims as business-as-usual.
Our extensive experience in infrastructure carbon management allowed us to provide insights and recommendations to the National carbon team on the emerging carbon management process and strategy. We were also able to draw upon this knowledge at the project level to give practical help and suggestions in delivering carbon savings on construction projects undertaken during the secondment.
