Temple’s innovative route appraisal tools reach UKRIA finals

The judges for the 2017 UK Rail Industry Awards have shortlisted Temple’s innovative approach to route appraisal for linear infrastructure.  The Appraisal of Sustainability (AoS) work is shortlisted alongside BAE systems, London Underground, Network Rail and the Northern Hub alliance in the infrastructure planning category that seeks to recognise the greatest improvements in the way that infrastructure is planned.  The winners will be announced at the awards evening on 9 February 2017 with Sir Peter Hendy providing the keynote address.

Temple’s route appraisal approach combines the GIS enabled SORTool (Strategic Option Review Tool) and strategic noise modelling with expert advice from a multi-disciplinary team.  It has been used to efficiently appraise many thousands of miles of potential route options for HS2.  The recognised benefits of Temple’s innovative approach have been to enhance the robustness of the selection of route options and to enable seamless and collaborative consideration of relevant sustainability aspects (environmental, community and economic) alongside other factors such as scheme cost and engineering constraints.  Ultimately it helps infrastructure promoters to communicate with stakeholders and reduce the risk of programme delays or cost escalation at subsequent stages of the project.  The SORTool and noise model enable this to be achieved whilst delivering significant time and cost efficiencies in the process.
