Lighting Services
Service Definition
Temple is able to provide a full consultancy service in exterior lighting and we are able to resource a number of lighting designers, lighting consultants and environmentalists onto specific projects, all with a thorough understanding of lighting design, its visual and environmental impacts. We are able to provide a range of lighting services, from Highways (Motorway, all purpose trunk and local/residential), general exteriors through to the design of systems for commercial, industrial and leisure uses e.g. sports facilities and stadiums. Our services incorporate feasibility studies, economic and environmental assessment. We are also able to offer an expert witness service provided by consultants with an international reputation.
Lighting Experience
In addition to working directly for government in providing research on the nuisance aspects of lighting we have had extensive experience working via other consultants, contractors and DBFO consortiums on large highways projects. Additionally, we have carried out lighting studies for commercial premises and operations where we have considered in detail the ecological impacts of lighting.
We recently delivered to Defra a research project examining the nuisance effects of lighting which will now become a statutory nuisance under the EPA 1990.
Background Information
Artificial Lighting is a fundamental and important aspect of our everyday environment bringing with it an increasing use of energy primarily in the delivery of light.
The last 30 years or so have seen increasing concern over the use of non renewable energy sources and the secondary problem of the generation of green house gases in the conversion of these non renewable resources to usable energy.
As Lighting Designers/Engineers we can contribute by deciding on a project by project basis what will provide the optimum solution considering all environmental issues across the board.
The result will be a compromise based on experience and judgement taking into account relevant legislation.
The environmental impact of a lighting scheme is not as simple as is frequently suggested. Direct energy use alone is an insufficient measure and itself must be carefully considered in relation to the overall design and aims of the project. Balance must be achieved between the quality of the lit environment from the user’s viewpoint and all aspects of the wider environment.
