Mark Southwood - Managing Director
Mark has over 25 years experience in the environmental sector. He has assisted many in the formulation of environmental policy and strategy including the Government (Defra, DfT and previously DETR), London Mayor and GLA, TfL, CIEH, and NSCA (now Environmental Protection UK). He has served on numerous Professional and European Committees and Working Groups concerned with transport and the environment and contributed to the Fifth Environmental Action Programme (towards sustainability) and Future EC Noise Policy through DGXI.
He has participated in high level briefings/discussions with Ministers and Government officials, leading consultation meetings with statutory agencies, local authorities and local residents on a range of high profile projects/schemes. He has also developed numerous consultation and communication programmes for clients in the private and public sector.
He has acted in a specialist (and expert) capacity on a range of topics including EIA, noise and vibration, contaminated land, air quality, water resources and waste. He has led numerous sustainability appraisals, EIAs and prepared Sustainability Statements and Environmental Statements for a wide range of clients both for very large infrastructure schemes (£1bn+) as well as smaller schemes and a variety of mixed use developments. He is an experienced environmental auditor and has developed environmental management systems for clients in the public and private sector.
He has played a significant role in the planning and delivery of large civil engineering projects and is experienced in identifying environmental and planning risks and managing the same. He was partly responsible for developing the Environmental Minimum Requirements and Code of Construction Practice as part of the Channel Tunnel Rail Link (CTRL) now used as a benchmark of good practice by the industry.
Mark recently carried out a number of strategic reviews on behalf of Government Departments and others e.g. a strategic review of environmental policy for rail programmes as part of HLOS and in respect of a new line capacity study (HS2).
