Temple helps Transport for London keep tube customers cool - April 09
Temple Group(www.templegroup.co.uk)– with offices within London and Sussex, is one of the partners working with TfL on the Cooling the Tube Programme, having secured a contract to provide specialist environmental monitoring on the Victoria line mid-tunnel ventilation upgrade programme. Temple will be supported by Plowman Craven on this project.
TfL is investing to address the issue of heat on the Tube. Getting heat out of the London Underground (LU) network is a huge engineering challenge. TfL has established a dedicated programme team to provide solutions to prevent temperatures on deepest parts of the network rising to unacceptable levels.
London Underground’s services are planned to increase by 25%, and new trains, that can accelerate quicker, are on order. But moving more customers and more trains takes more energy, even when the best of modern technology is applied, and more energy creates more heat.
Keeping the Tube’s customers cool involves developing new technologies, as well as making best use of more traditional approaches. And every effort is being made to ensure that “green” methods are used wherever practicable.
Temple’s brief includes the monitoring of noise, vibration, air quality, dust, strain and movement, at five mid-tunnel ventilation shafts (MTVS) on the Victoria line prior to, during and post the installation of new higher exhaust fans allowing for a doubling of the ventilation capacity. The contract includes the option for an additional four sites to be monitored.
Mark Southwood, Temple Group’s Managing Director, comments: “Temple is delighted to be involved on such a vital infrastructure project for the Capital, which builds on the success we have already had supporting other clients on major infrastructure projects. This project will require a range of technical competences and state of the art monitoring equipment as well as effective engagement with TfL and stakeholders alike.”
