Thameslink 2000’s objective was to increase accessibility to, from and through the heart of London by improving and expanding the existing Thameslink service. 

The works comprise of remodelling Farringdon, Blackfriars and London Bridge Stations and significant infrastructure works such as a new viaduct and tunnel, plus platform extensions.

Benefits

The assessment included a Sustainability Appraisal.  The Sustainability Appraisal examined the extent to which Thameslink 2000 either supports or deviates from principles of sustainable development as well as providing a benchmark for future improvement.

The appraisal was carried out to determine whether the project supports wider Government objectives for sustainable development, namely:

• effective protection of the environment
• prudent use of natural resources
• social progress which recognises the needs of everyone; and
• maintenance of high and stable levels of economic growth.

The appraisal employed 23 sustainability objectives.  For each objective, one or more measures or indicators of performance were used to help determine the extent to which the sustainability objective is being met. 

The findings of the appraisal will be used by the project Team at subsequent project with the overall objective of improving the sustainability performance of the project still further at subsequent project phases.
